Borrowing Privileges and Library Fines

The FNUniv Library provides different loan periods for different borrowing groups. All user groups require a patron card to borrow books. Overdue fines are charged to encourage the timely return of Library materials and to ensure fair and equal access to Library resources for all patrons. See the Borrowing Schedule and Fine Schedule below for more information.

Library Fines

Fine Schedule for Overdue or Lost Items
Regular Loans50 cents/day up to a maximum of $16.00 per item
Recalled Items$5.00/hour after the recall due date, up to a maximum of $100.00 per item
Reserves$5.00/hour up to a maximum of $100.00 per item
Laptops$10.00/day up to a maximum of $50.00 per item
Lost ItemsReplacement cost + $25.00 administration fee
Laptop replacement cost is $420.00 (+ $25.00 administration fee).
Most items are declared lost 30 days after their due date.
Reserves are declared lost 3 days after their due date.

Library patrons are responsible for the timely return of library materials or the renewal of library items before the due date. Library staff will not be held responsible for accumulated patron fines. Overdue and fines and fee notices are mailed/emailed once a week.

Fees must be paid at the FNUniv Financial Services Office by cash, debit/credit or cheque made payable to the First Nations University of Canada.

Failure to Return Items or Pay Fines and Fees

If a library item has not been returned 30 days after the due date, the replacement cost and administration fee is applied to the patron’s account. Returning the item will remove the replacement cost, but not the accumulated overdue fines or administration fee.

Outstanding fines and fees over $49.00 will prevent the patron from further borrowing from FNUniv libraries. Borrowing privileges will be reinstated once the outstanding fee is reduced to $49.00 or less. FNUniv library fines and fees that are outstanding for 50 days or more will block registration, convocation and release of credits until outstanding fines have been paid.
