First Nations University of Canada graduates celebrate Spring Convocation in Regina

It is that time of year again: the summer solstice is near, winter term classes are done – and the First Nations University of Canada community comes together to celebrate the graduates that have worked so hard this year to receive their certificates, diplomas, and degrees.  

FNUniv, Canada’s Indigenous University, announced that 165 graduates will walk across the stage at the annual Spring Convocation ceremony on the evening of June 16 at Conexus Arts Centre in Regina, Sask, one of the highest numbers of graduates in recent history.

One of the students graduating is Kristen Ledoux. Ledoux, Swampy Cree from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, will receive her Bachelor of Arts degree – with a major in psychology, and a minor in Indigenous studies. 

“I’m really excited,” she says. “I feel very fulfilled I was able to accomplish this.” 

Ledoux says that her journey was difficult at times, having to juggle two part-time jobs while going to university – all while caring for her four nieces and nephews.  

“Time management was a big thing,” she says.  

Although learning how to prioritize her time was a bit challenging, she encourages other students like herself to dig deep and to keep going.  

“Keep your head up,” she says. 

The professors and instructors at the First Nations University of Canada is what makes her university journey special. She says they were so compassionate toward her.  

“They’re more understanding, especially with your own personal activities and responsibilities outside of university,” she says.  

Moving forward, Ledoux already received a job offer before graduation. She is excited to say that she has secured a job within child protection services.  

The annual Spring Convocation ceremony will honour graduates from the FNUniv Faculties of Social Work, Arts, Business Administration, Science, Education, and Media, Art & Performance. Three graduates received their Master’s of Indigenous Education degrees. Numerous diplomas and certificates will also be awarded during the Spring Convocation ceremony.
