Canadian Institutes of Health Research Announces Major Funding Renewal for SK-NEIHR Initiative

We are pleased to share some exciting updates regarding Indigenous health research. The Government of Canada has renewed its funding for the Network Environments for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHR), with a focus on the Saskatchewan NEIHR (SK-NEIHR). Since its launch in 2019, the SK-NEIHR initiative has brought together organizations, including the University of Regina and FNUniv, to lead community-driven research aimed at creating healthier futures for Indigenous peoples. This work is grounded in Indigenous knowledge and science, focusing on culturally informed approaches.

The renewal is supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canada’s leading health research agency, which continues to invest in Indigenous-led projects to promote impactful, community-based research.

The SK-NEIHR Research Leadership Team includes:

• Dr. Robert (Bobby) Henry (Indigenous Studies, University of Saskatchewan) – Nominated Principal Investigator
• Dr. Caroline Tait (Social Work, University of Calgary) – Founding Nominated Principal Investigator
• Dr. Carrie Lavallie (Indigenous Health Studies, FNUniv)
• Dr. Edward Doolittle (Associate Dean, Research, FNUniv) – Decision Maker
• Dr. Shane Keepness (Indigenous Studies, FNUniv) – Principal Investigator
• Dr. Angela McGinnis (Educational Psychology, UofR) – Principal Investigator
• Lori Campbell (Associate Vice-President of Indigenous Engagement, UofR) – Decision Maker

We are also proud to congratulate Dr. Brenda Green, RPN, BSc, MSc, PhD, on her recent appointment to a 3-year term with the CIHR College of Reviewers. This prestigious role will allow Dr. Green to provide her expertise in evaluating and shaping health research projects nationwide, further supporting Indigenous health research initiatives.
