Dr. Sharon Acoose, Professor of Indigenous Social Work, recently took a group of students and staff members, Sheila Acoose and Old Ones (Elders) Jo and Judy Pelly, to the XVIII International Congress on Foreign Languages, Communication and Culture (WEFLA 2024) and at the International Seminar on Canadian Studies (SECAN 2024), held in Holguin, Cuba, on April 24, 25, and 26, 2024.
Approximately ten students representing the unique perspective of Indigenous Social Work presented their research at the Conference. Two of the exceptional presentations will be published via SECAN. The publications mark a significant milestone in the seven years Dr. Acoose has attended this Conference, as it is the first time it will publish Indigenous alums and students presently doing their Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work (BISW).
The student presentations were not just excellent, but they were also graciously accepted by the people who participated in the presentations. Salvador, one of the organizers of WEFLA, said that in his 20 years of involvement, he had never heard presentations that were so passionate and heartfelt. This feedback was a great compliment to the students and a testament to their hard work and dedication.
The First Nations University of Canada, Indigenous Social Work Students, and Alumni did an outstanding job at the Conference. Dr. Acoose feels quite proud of her students and honoured to have taught them and been their guide.
As a token of deep respect and gratitude, Dr. Vilma Paez, a faculty member of the University of Holguin, was presented with a star blanket on behalf of FNUniv. This gesture was a heartfelt expression of appreciation for the fantastic hospitality shown to the SISW cohort, which played a significant role in the success of our students at the Conference.
